Bluehost vs Hostgator Shared Hosting Review

I used both Bluehost and Hostgator. Both have plus and minus.

Both are ranking top on most reviews. I don’t just review with my mouth. I review by actually buying a lot of shared hosting accounts with them.

In both hosting you can host unlimited number of domains. For hostgator you need to pick baby plan. Both support CPANEL. You can add more domains with add on domains feature where all the other domains will be hosted on a different directory.

Both shared hosting have awesome CPU power. I sort of need that because I own 1300 domain names. Obviously those domains do not fit on one shared hosting. Hosting would then ask you to upgrade to VPS or dedi. Here’s the catch. Even a dedi is not as powerful as Hostgator and Bluehost shared hosting. Well, a $230/month dedi is probably equivalent to just 1-2 shared hosting costing a mere $10-$20! You see why I review only 2 of them?

I once hosted a mere 30 domains on justhost and justhost hosting already suspend me because they said I used 90% of CPU resources there. In Hostgator, I can host 100 domains and there is no problem whatsoever.

Which one you should choose? Bluehost or Hostgator? Well, both are very good. I bought more Hostgator accounts than Bluehost accounts as you shall see.

Now the up and down.

In Hostgator every single shared account I buy comes with a different name server. For example, some of my name server is like

NS1053.HOSTGATOR.COM    NS1054.HOSTGATOR.COM

Say I put too many domains in one account. So I simply want to buy another account. Well, I simply do that and change the name server. In Hostgator it’s simple. In bluehost, I never have had that experience but I think I will need to ask customer service. While both have awesome customer service with 24/7 live chat, I would prefer to do things on my end without human’s help.

In bluehost, all domains will have to point to the same name server, NS1.BLUEHOST.COM    NS2.BLUEHOST.COM. So to move domains from one account to the other you will need to unassign those domains from one of the account and reassign them to the other ones.

Also you need to move the name server of your domain name to Bluehost first before you can add domains to your account.

Hostgator is also far more lenient. If some crazy bigots complain, Hostgator will only suspend a domain, or a directory, in your site. The other domain names that you host will still be running. One of my friend told me that Bluehost suspend his whole account just because one of the domain there is problematic. If your site is adult or pharmacy related, then Hostgator is the way to go. That’s because bluehost do not allow such content to be hosted on their site. It’s Bluehost biggest disadvantage.

At Hostgator you can pay monthly while at bluehost you need to pay at least 6 months in advance.

But Bluehost has one killer edge I love.

If your site is not adult or pharm related, but use a lot of CPU, during the time your site uses a lot of CPU you won’t get suspended. You just get throttled. If your sites are throttled more than 10% of the time, then you know it’s time to buy another shared account. For someone earning $200/day, another less than $10/month account is nothing.

At hostgator they will suspend your script. But then, you simply buy another account and redistribute those domains on more shared accounts.
